5 Home Improvements You Should Never DIY

Going DIY around the home can save you a lot of money and give you a great sense of personal achievement – but there are times when it’s best to leave it to the pros. Certain jobs can be dangerous to attempt without training whilst others may be fiddly and potentially expensive if things go wrong. Here are just a few jobs that you shouldn’t try unless you’re professionally trained yourself.

Gas plumbing

Plumbing in general can be complicated and potentially messy business. Lots of people flood their kitchen because they fail to fit a pipe correctly. That said, some waterworks-based jobs can be attempted with little risk. The same can’t be said for gas plumbing. If things go wrong and there’s a gas leak, you could turn your home into a fireball or risk carbon monoxide poisoning. No matter how simple that YouTube tutorial seems – even if it’s just installing a gas oven - always hire a licensed gas plumber unless you have experience yourself.

There are some electrical jobs that can be done easily oneself without much risk such as replacing light fittings or changing a socket cover (just make sure to always turn the power off at the mains first). However, when it comes to anything more complex, you should always hire a professional electrician. Faulty electrics could lead to a house fire or an electric shock. In some cases, attempting your own electrical work without licensing could be illegal.

Removing interior walls

Smashing a wall down with a sledgehammer may sound fun, but often there’s more to it than that. If it’s a load bearing wall, you could bring down the whole house with it, which isn’t an ideal situation. Some walls may also contain electrics or pipes, which you need to be certain to avoid. Getting a professional to assess your wall first could be worthwhile.

Installing windows

Much like knocking down a wall, creating a hole for a window can damage the structural integrity of your home if it’s not done properly. Then there’s the issue of putting the actual glass in. Many an amateur has attempted to put in a window themselves only to make a single false move that ends up with the entire pane of glass being smashed into smithereens. Hiring a window installation expert could save you having to deal with this nightmare scenario.

Repairing your roof

Repairing a roof can also be a precarious job. Whilst some roofs look like they’re easy to walk on, they can be misleading. You could slip and injure yourself or you could damage tiles by being too heavy footed. To ensure minimal danger and damage, consider hiring a roof repair company to take care of this job.
